can be found among the different neighborhoods, so many of which have retained
the elegance of days of yore and others, the splendor of beautiful modern
structures.

waterfront or a tree-lined street, local realtors report a very "healthy
market" in Greater Bay Shore.
Since 1923 Southside Hospital, a nonprofit acute care medical facility, has been a reassuring anchor in the community. The hospital is currently upgrading all of its facilities in conjunction with its newly formed association with the North Shore- Long Island Jewish Health System, (a network of 13 hospitals and 23 nursing homes). Southside Hospital presently has 452 beds, 550 physicians on staff, and 1,300 employees who are engaged in room treatment, out-patient and extensive community services. Southside's Regional Center for Brain Injury Rehabilitation is the only such designated center in the Nassau/Suffolk area. Over 500 procedures a year are now being performed in Southside's Vascular Institute, administered by the most renowned vascular surgeons on Long Island. Southside's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center provides short/ long term and in/out-patient therapeutic programs for recovery and adjustment of the patient. The Bay Shore-Brightwaters Ambulance Corps, in partnership with Southside Hospital, is always ready to serve the community at a moment's notice.

Since it was organized in 1891, the Bay Shore Fire Department has been the
gathering place for heroes. 150 volunteer firefighters stand ready to protect
the lives and properties of their neighbors. Excelling in competition and
service, the Bay Shore Fire Department maintains exemplary certification training
and equipment and system upgrade schedules. The department keeps a pro-active
community profile through its sponsorship of youth and adult fire safety education
programs, its administration of a junior drill team and its willingness to
actively participate in all community events.
The Greater Bay Shore community is served by the 3rd Precinct, which has assigned to it nearly 300 Suffolk County Police Officers. These officers are charged with maintaining a safe and peaceful environment in which people can live and work. A cornerstone of this mission is the 3rd Precinct's commitment to community oriented policing. This includes maintaining open lines of communication between the residents and the police through local civic groups, schools, houses of worship and local business organizations. Foot Patrols on Main Street, bicycle patrols and Community Liaison Officers enhance the quality of life for all residents of Bay Shore. Additionally these officers provide educational services such as bicycle and home safety workshops as well as crime prevention programs.
Begun almost one hundred years ago, the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library has served the community and grown with it over the years. The library has become a thriving community center for residents of all ages and now serves a sophisticated suburban population with varied tastes and a diversity of interests. In addition to traditional offerings, the library provides programs, workshops, meeting rooms for all local organizations and a kaleidoscope of cultural, as well as educational, opportunities.

The
Great South Bay YMCA is an integral part of the Bay Shore community. In 1991
the Y openedits 55,000 square-foot health, aquatic, recreation, and child-care
community center. As a testament to its success, only ten years later an 11,000
square-foot addition, the Martha and William Entenmann Pavilion, was dedicated.
True to its motto, "We build Strong Kids, Strong Families, Strong Communities,"
the Y offers hundreds of programs, including child-care, teen, summer and
holiday day camps, aquatics, health enhancement, sports, recreation and cultural
arts.

The Bay Shore
Community Band Shell, located by the water in Dr. George S. King Park in the
center of Main Street, brings our community together throughout the year for
special events and activities such as summertime concerts, holiday celebrations,
award ceremonies and parades.
